First I have to deal with the ridiculous amount of oil my wife’s matrix consumes, because apparently 1qt per 1100 miles is deemed acceptable somehow. Now I end up with this

Kinja'd!!!

Why? Because you designed the engine in the matrix so the tensioner pulley nut can only be reached with a 1/4 inch drive and only pulled back with a long ass cheater bar. Everything else is way too big to fit, so here’s where I ended up. Seriously don’t think I’ll ever consider a fwd drive Toyota ever again after this shit.

I used a half inch drive and a “cheater bar” since I didn't have my breaker bar

I have to replace one of the rear spindles (knuckles) on my girlfriend’s Pontiac Vibe (Matrix) because the lower control arm bushings are non serviceable and integral to the spindle. One of the bushings has worn out and seized around the toe adjustment bolt.

Mmm makes me miss the Tercel a little. You could slide out the radiator and have tons of room to reach the tensioner pully, timing belt cover, water pump... although the thermostat was still impossible to reach but by God I replaced two somehow.

I’m more impressed by the 1/4 inch ratchet that bent before the gears broke.

Yea it’s wedged between the motor and the frame on this one...nothing that can really be removed

I’m an engineer and it really really bugs Me when things are designed to be non-stop serviceable

Sucks. It is a tight fit. Scratched my hands up pretty bad because my gloves kept getting caught so I couldn't wear them.

Short story. My brother was an airframe/powerplant meachanic for United. With the 757’s first came on line, he was on the line when a duration replacement for a piece of equipment on the inside of the fuselage, but had a bolt under the wing, came up for replacement. The mechanics all tried to get their sockets in there since one of the mounting bolts were on the outside, under the wing, but there was a triangular gusset attached to the wing, parallel with the fuselage, that wouldn’t allow clearance. Senior mechanics were called in, and then the Boeing eng. rep was called in and they decided to bore a hole into the gusset to allow access to the bolt.

I very, very, clearly remember my brother telling me that, while he picked up his Coor’s Light and drained it. He set it down with that “I’m gonna fuck something up face” that I know so well, and continued. “They didn’t make the gusset so someone could bore a hole in it.”

He didn’t say a thing. Just went to his tool box, pulled out the right socket and cut it off so there was only about 1/8” of bite on the bolt at the business end. He walked up while the team with the drill was positioning, stuck it up into the gap between the gusset and fuselage and got the bolt started, pulled the socket out, then got the rest out with his fingers. He left the bolt and cut off socket on the ground and returned to normal duties.

He was still 3 months from having to join the union at that point. Obviously a trouble maker. But I remember that story and I’ve even used it once decades later. Maybe it’d work for you.

You have my sympathies! Had a Meriva, was told by the garage the oil consumption is only deemed a warranty issue if it’s more than a litre every 1,000 miles…
